This barrier island near Pass-A-Grille and the North Channel is known for
excellent shelling, sunbathing and bird watching opportunities. Numerous boats
from St. Pete Beach and John's Pass offer sightseeing packages that take guests
to Shell Key for sunbathing and dolphin watching near the island. It has also
been named as one of the five most important sites in Florida for nesting and
migrating endangered shore and sea birds.
This is a pretty nice place to drop your anchor if you have a smaller boat with
outboard's or I/O's. The water is very shallow and most people beach their
boats on the south side of the key to enjoy this location. There is easy access
from the Gulf and a protected cove offer a great place to run with the dog, have
a BBQ, or just relax.
Shell Key is usually pretty crowded so if you want your privacy, don't go or go and
know that people like to be seen on this key. If you need something there is a
"House Boat" that sells just about anything you could want. Also, look for the
"muscle boats" on the east side of the key.
